Vein valves ensure blood flows in the correct direction from your legs to your heart. Venous insufficiency occurs when blood backflows through weak valves, causing leg pain, swelling and sensation of heaviness and tiredness as well as painful varicose veins. Venous reflux can be reduced with Endovenous Laser Ablation performed at The Vascular Experts Florida.
Endovenous Laser Therapy, or EVLT, corrects venous insufficiency using a thin catheter with a laser tip that delivers laser energy to the inside of the vein. The heat delivered by the laser treatment will induce scarring inside the vein and blood is rerouted to other healthy veins in the leg. The damaged vessel collapses and is absorbed by the body, leaving your legs healthy with adequate blood flow and removing venous bulges.
EVLT is recommended to treat insufficiency in veins that lay in a straight path, such as saphenous veins. Almost all patients are candidates for EVLT as long as insufficiency is confirmed by ultrasound and treatment may be combined with other types of therapy such as sclerotherapy or microphlebectomy to address tortuous varicosities that are not amenable to EVLT. A consultation with Dr. Vargas at The Vascular Experts Florida can help you determine your best treatment for varicose veins and venous insufficiency.
EVLT is a minimally invasive procedure performed in the comfort of our office and takes about 30-45 minutes. Dr. Vargas will numb the area where the vein will be accessed under ultrasound. The laser catheter is advanced through the diseased vein and activated to deliver heat that will cause it to collapse and scar down.
Results with EVLT are relatively quick, generally with an improvement of symptoms and diminished varicose vein prominence within a week or two. Symptoms will continue to improve over time over the next several weeks to months.
Dr. Vargas will go over all your aftercare instructions thoroughly. Immediately following treatment, you’re encouraged to walk to help prevent blood clot formation. You’re free to resume most activities and even return to work immediately after your procedure so you can continue with your routine. You should avoid strenuous exercise and hot baths or saunas as well as spicy foods or alcohol. Compression stockings are necessary for 7-10 days following the procedure to aid circulation and prevent bruising. Within one week, you’ll return to The Vascular Experts Florida for an ultrasound to monitor the health of your treated veins and assess the treatment’s success.
